I think the desire to be happy is within all of us. So as we go through the motions of our lives, we go looking for this happiness, trying to discover new ways to feel joy. However, without God’s guidance and presence, we often go looking for happiness in all the wrong places.

Thankfully, God is more than willing to point us in the right direction. The first half of this collection of Scriptures details what we look to in order to find happiness, while the last half shows us what should be our true goal to achieve happiness.

1 John 2:15-16 (NIV)

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[a] is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.

1 Corinthians 7:32-33 (NLV)

32 I want you to be free from the cares of this world. The man who is not married can spend his time working for the Lord and pleasing Him. 33 The man who is married cares for the things of the world. He wants to please his wife.

Matthew 7:15-20 (NLV)

15 “Watch out for false teachers. They come to you dressed as if they were sheep. On the inside they are hungry wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruit. Do men pick grapes from thorns? Do men pick figs from thistles? 17 It is true, every good tree has good fruit. Every bad tree has bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot have bad fruit. A bad tree cannot have good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not have good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 So you will know them by their fruit.

Philippians 4:11-13(NLV)

11 I am not saying I need anything. I have learned to be happy with whatever I have. 12 I know how to get along with little and how to live when I have much. I have learned the secret of being happy at all times. If I am full of food and have all I need, I am happy. If I am hungry and need more, I am happy. 13 I can do all things because Christ gives me the strength.

Psalm 37:4-6 (VOICE)

4 Take great joy in the Eternal! His gifts are coming, and they are all your heart desires!5 Commit your path to the Eternal; let Him direct you. Put your confidence in Him, and He will follow through with you. 6 He will spread out righteousness for you as a sunrise spreads radiance over the land; He will deliver justice for you into the light of the high sun.

Isaiah 26:3-4 (NLV)

3 You will keep the man in perfect peace whose mind is kept on You, because he trusts in You. 4 Trust in the Lord forever. For the Lord God is a Rock that lasts forever.

Proverbs 16:19-20(NLV)

19 It is better to be poor in spirit among poor people, than to divide the riches that were taken with the proud. 20 He who listens to the Word will find good, and happy is he who trusts in the Lord.

1 Peter 4:13 (NIV)

13 But rejoice in as much as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.
