Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.

Proverbs 31:8

God’s heart for inclusion is infused in Scripture, and we have been championing inclusivity for decades at the BACC. Today, we are celebrating World Down Syndrome Day by spreading this message to churches everywhere: including people with disabilities benefits everyone.

Our Women’s Ministry Leader, Gail Ewell, recently wrote an op-ed for ChurchLeaders.com about inclusion at the BACC and how other churches can build it. ChurchLeaders.com resources, informs, and connects church communities around the world, and we are excited to spread God’s vision for inclusion to more people worldwide!

BACC leads the way in inclusion – For over twenty years, BACC has been a community leader in promoting inclusive programs. “Inclusive E-Life and E-Sports programs operate in 20 different locations with six different sports. It’s also grown, thanks to parents and volunteers, to include inclusive gardening, gaming, photography, dance, and even a pilot STEM class,” Gail wrote.

Every small gesture matters – Inclusion has come to life at the BACC because so many members of the church have caught the vision for making it happen.

In addition to E-Sports and E-Life, members of the church volunteer as “sitting buddies” for those who need them during service. We educate one another on accessibility for those with sensory, physical, or other disabilities, and we take steps to make sure our physical spaces are welcoming to everyone.

Inclusive churches are radiant, joyful, and irresistible.

“You are the light of the world-like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

Matthew 5:14-16 NLT

Inclusivity is God’s plan – Inclusion shines a bright light in our communities and helps people see God’s heart. Jesus repeatedly and personally interacted with people with a wide range of disabilities in Scripture, and following his example benefits everyone. After all, one in 36 children is estimated to have autism, and developmental disabilities more broadly are on the rise. Every action we take matters!

So today, for World Down Syndrome Day, let’s rock our socks and shine a light in the world around us!

Until next time!
