The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me it will all be yours.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.”
Luke 4:5-7
Everyday we are faced with choices.
I believe the most life-changing decisions we make are the small ones that influence the way we live daily. In this scripture Jesus, with splendor and authority placed at his feet, chose a relationship with God over personal gain.
Growing up, my greatest desire was to attract the attention of the world. This drug, like an addiction, stole my heart for God and convinced me to trade true intimacy for promises that were broken and cheap.
At 18, I began modeling professionally and by 20 I featured in GQ Magazine. I chased the world, but the process nearly killed me. As I sat in my New York apartment with gnats flying around my bed hung over from cheap bottles of wine, I realized that my paradise had become hell on earth.
Jesus understood where real satisfaction and purpose came from, serving and obeying God, a purpose greater then self. When I came to this understanding, my life changed.
- What are you chasing? Attention? Personal Gain? Intimacy?
- Can it fulfill you?
- What would you need to do to choose a relationship with God over the world and its promises?
