You are the light that shines for the world to see. You are like a city built on a hill that cannot be hidden. [15] People don’t hide a lamp under a bowl. They put it on a lampstand. Then the light shines for everyone in the house. [16] In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16 ERV

Last Sunday, we celebrated 30 years of gathering all nine Bay Area campuses at Shoreline Amphitheatre for our annual service. This year’s theme was “Shine,” based on Matthew 5:14-16: we’re called to let our lives show others what God has done, so they see it and give God credit.

This year’s event highlighted some incredible things God has done:

  • Ten people were baptized this weekend—eight during the service and two before. They shared how God had changed their lives and relationships.
  • We recognized our next generation of leaders—students and young adults who are serving and being trained in spiritual leadership.
  • Gen Z made up the majority of a 100+ person choir.
  • Our newest women’s ministry leaders spoke about the transformative impact of investing in women’s leadership.
  • We heard how our partnerships with community organizations like E-Life and E-Sports have taken children from the sidelines to the center of the same court where Steph Curry does his magic.
  • The sermon reaffirmed who we are: God-focused, life-changing, and non-denominational—bringing hope to the millions of people in the Bay Area and beyond who are searching for the opportunities Jesus offers.

How to bring the “shine” into our daily lives

Shoreline inspired us about the impact we can make on a world in search of hope, help, and healing. But how do we take what we learned and live it out? Shining together at one event is one thing. Shining in daily life—at work, at home, in difficult circumstances and with limited resources—is harder.

In today’s newsletter, we want to give you a simple spiritual thought and several resources you can read, watch, and listen to this weekend. Let’s start with a great passage about shining brightly:

Do everything without complaining and arguing, [15] so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.

Philippians 2:14-15 NLT

Philippians 2:14-15 gives a specific instruction here: Do everything without complaining or arguing, so your life stands out.

Complaining stops us from shining because it’s a way we resist God’s call to grow. Growth requires looking inward at our motives — what we call “The Frontier of the Heart.” When we address our internal resistance rather than complaining about the areas of our lives that feel hard, our focus shifts from short-term frustration to building something lasting.

Take Action: Spend five minutes today identifying where complaining has crept into your heart. Ask God to redirect that energy toward building instead.

Read, Watch, Listen

Until next time!
