And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me [as My disciples, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk], and I will make you fishers of men.”

Mark 1:17 AMP

On March 1st, Fox News published an op ed written by our executive minister, Russ Ewell. In it, Russ argues that many young men labeled “toxic” are not inherently harmful but unformed or malformed—part of a generation that is absent of mentorship. Rather than condemning this generation, the piece calls for relational apprenticeship and influence that teach responsibility, empathy, and purpose.

At Bay Area Christian Church we call this practice by its biblical name, discipleship: intergenerational mentoring, apprenticeship‑style formation, and habits that shape character and service. Russ Ewell’s op‑ed simply makes God’s voice audible by phrasing a timeless biblical truth in secular language—what young men need (mentors, practices, community, moral formation) is exactly what Jesus’s model of discipleship has always offered. The BACC believes that the Bible calls us all to practice discipleship, and when we choose to live this way, we will change people’s lives for the better and make a lasting difference in the world.
