Each year as we approach our yearly summer camps, we like to do what we can to aid the families who’d love to send their kids but simply can’t afford it due to tough circumstances. So, starting today, if you’d like to support our Y Camp Scholarship Fund you can make a charitable donation that will go directly towards supporting a teen getting a ride to the Santa Cruz mountains. Simply visit our PayPal donations page and enter any amount you’re able to give, and it will be routed towards our scholarship fund.

By now you’ve probably heard that we’ll be once again having our annual Shoreline service on June 10th at 11am at the one and only Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View. But you may be asking yourself, “what exactly should I expect when I arrive?”

“Bridge to Hope” is an annual Bike-A-Thon and Walk-a-thon fundraising event taking place this year on May 19th, 2012 to support the ongoing ministries of the Bay Area Christian Church.

100% of the proceeds are tax deductible. Funds will be used to support the development of Campus, Y (Youth), and Professionals throughout the Bay Area as well as ongoing operational expenses of full-time staff, interns and hiring additional young staff as needed.

The specialized ministries of the BACC have had profound impact on young people in the greater Bay Area community. Over 500 teens and middle school children are mentored by over 150 volunteer workers currently involved in the youth program. Mentorship provides character education and training rarely addressed in typical schools and youth athletic programs.

Kids also learn the value of mentoring and serving others, such as special-needs children, through programs like E-Soccer and E-Karate. The inclusive environment (special needs kids involved with and participating right alongside typical kids, mentors and coaches) teaches and trains special qualities of heart and character, such as empathy, compassion, leadership and selfless service, just to name a few.

Peer groups and family involvement are other big parts of the youth program that contribute to its effectiveness. In addition, the overall mentoring experience for the youth provides a special flavor of community involvement that will prepare them for leadership roles in high school, college and on into their professional lives.

Join us for an amazing time hiking the trails while raising money for a great cause. There are multiple lengths and difficulty trails to choose from so everyone can participate. After the hike, we will enjoy a BBQ lunch altogether.

Garage sales have historically been one of the most successful fundraising events for our annual Special Contribution. Their popularity stems not only for the convenience provided by being able to remove superfluous items from your house, but also from the experiences they provide. But, how does one organize a garage sale that is not only memorable, but productive and, dare I say, lucrative?

Oakland residents and BACC members Bernard and Tracy Jones have, for several years running, organized and executed successful garage sales that have net them over $3,000 on average each year. And, lucky for us (and you), they’ve agreed to a bacc.cc exclusive: 5 tips from the masters on how to prepare for the greatest garage sale ever!

1. Operation: COUPONS

The secret sauce to the Jones’ success has been their coupon accumulation strategy. For a full year, the Jones gather “buy one get one free” coupons, and use them to purchase extra goods from the store. They store the extras in bins in their garage. By the time May comes around, Bernard and Tracy have 35 bins filled with brand new products to sell.

“It’s a big source of revenue for us,” Bernard said. “We end up accumulating everything from laundry detergent to make up, and it all goes.”

2. Plan multiple garage sales

Don’t make the mistake of planning only one event. The Jones’ block off several Saturdays to make sure there is ample time to clear their inventory.

“This year we’re starting late,” Bernard said. “We’re having our first garage sale this Saturday, and will have one more on June 2nd. Depending on how things are going we may have one more”

Typically the Jones’ hold 3-4 garage sales once Spring hits.

3. Involve others

“The best part about all this is getting the neighborhood involved,” Bernard said.

Leading up to the event, Tracey sends newsletters out to the neighbors, as well as promoting it at the local stores. Pulling in friends not only to check out the wares but also help sell their own items always manages to pull in more buyers, since it means there are now that many more friends of friends getting exposure.

“She’s the mastermind behind all this,” he said. “She drives this whole thing, and is really good at it. We pull in folks from the neighborhood every year, and it really helps.”

4. Pray!

“Probably the most important part,” Bernard said.

The Jones’ take time every day to pray through everything…their monetary goal, for friends to come, to meet new friends, and more.

5. Use Craigslist

The Jones’ make sure to utilize Craigslist, as it is a high traffic free service that people already use for just about everything. You can read up on how to post ads to Craigslist if you’re not the most tech savvy. It’s a great way to get people to come who may be nowhere near where you live, but are always looking for great deals.

Our second annual above the rim tournament is right around the corner, and the last position you want to find yourself in is being completely caught off guard and unprepared for the fierce competition. With that in mind, here are five tips that will help you get in the right place mentally and physically.

1. Get a good night sleep.

You don’t want to be drowsy and grumpy when you play, but well rested ready to compete. Resist the urge to be out all night Saturday, and force yourself to come home at a reasonable time.

2. Pre-game shoot around

This will be helpful in the early morning, like 8:30am-9:30a. You loosen up your muscle and get the blood flowing early in the morning. Most importantly it’ll help you get into a shooting rhythm before you play in the tournament.

3. Eat healthy through the day.

Make sure you eat a good healthy breakfast and bring lunch. Then before the game have a small, but filling snack like protein and carbs if you want so that your body will be energized.

4. Get to the game about 30 minutes early.

Think about plays, who’s here, scouting out the other teams players examining what might be their strengths and/or weaknesses are. Who’s guarding who?

5. Listen to songs that get you pumped up.

This gets you ready and just in a good mode overall. Music can calm you down and can help prepare you mentally. Examples: Space Jam soundtrack (specifically “I Believe I Can Fly” by R-Kelly), “Like Mike,” anything from the Rocky soundtracks, and any popular Black Eye Peas song.
