Bay Area Basketball: The Evolution of Our Summer Hoop League

Bay Area Basketball: The Evolution of Our Summer Hoop League

When Russ Ewell moved to the Bay Area from Washington D.C. in 1993 he brought his love for the game and a vision to have a competitive basketball league similar to the leagues he played in on the east coast.  So in 1993 the summer hoop league was launched. This is the 22nd year of our annual summer hoop league, “Above The Rim”!   The summer league has grown significantly over the years starting with solid play from competitors like point guard, Chris Frizzi, Howard Ruud with a lethal 3 point shot, and Eric Young “the floor general.”  As the league grew in reputation, the level of competition and talent grew with the addition of  former NCAA athletes like Larry Green who played at the US Naval Academy and Todd Singleton who played at Duke University. These guys added to the reputation of the league and  now our “Above The Rim” hoop league is one of the Bay Area’s premier summer men’s basketball leagues, with former or current NCAA athletes who are alumni of programs like Stanford, Santa Clara, Tuskegee University, MIT for example, anchoring every  team.

One of the great attributes of the league in addition to the talent level, is that it is a positive environment to play in and a great family experience for the players and the fans.

Come on out  Sunday afternoons throughout the summer to watch some fierce competition and great games!
